Can an Israeli court force a husband to give a get?

Not in the strict halachic sense — a get obtained through physical force is invalid under Jewish law. However, the Rabbinical Court can issue a judgment obligating the husband to give the get (get chiyuv) and impose escalating civil and criminal sanctions under the Rabbinical Courts Law (Enforcement of Divorce Judgments) 5755-1995. These include imprisonment up to 10 years in extreme cases, travel bans, and licence suspensions. Most husbands comply rather than endure prolonged sanctions. A get given under these conditions is accepted as valid by leading rabbinical authorities when it follows a get chiyuv ruling.
