What is the difference between a visa and a residency status in Israel?

A visa (such as B/2, B/1, or A/2) authorizes your entry and stay in Israel for a specific purpose and duration. Residency status — temporary or permanent — is a deeper legal classification that determines your entitlements: the right to work freely, access the national health system, vote in local elections, and eventually apply for citizenship. Visas are the starting point; residency status is the destination after a sustained period of legal stay. Citizenship through Aliyah bypasses the residency ladder entirely for eligible Jewish nationals.
