I signed a guarantee for my child's apartment in Israel. Am I responsible for the full mortgage debt?

Your maximum exposure depends on what your guarantee document specifies. Under the 1992 amendments to the Guarantee Law, a personal guarantee in a consumer transaction must state a capped amount — you cannot be held liable for more than that figure. If your guarantee does not specify a maximum, you should consult an Israeli attorney immediately, as an uncapped consumer guarantee may be challengeable. Additionally, if your child is making regular mortgage payments, the creditor cannot pursue you for those amounts — only for actual arrears and costs arising from default.
